Market Background

In the Australian government budget for fiscal year 2023 announced on May 9, the government will allocate A$14.6 billion (68.674 billion yuan) for energy expenditure, consumption and health in the next four years. The budget for new energy investment and energy storage bidding is expected to be A$4 billion (18.797 billion yuan), about A$1.3 billion will be used for the household energy upgrade fund, and A$400 million will be used to establish the “Net Zero Emissions Management Bureau”. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has also proposed a development roadmap for the next 30 years, planning to deploy 46GW/640GWh of dispatchable energy storage by 2050, with an average duration of more than 10 hours. According to the latest research by Rystad Energy, among the 39 electricity markets in the world, the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) has the largest daily electricity price fluctuations, followed by Japan and the Philippines.

Australia’s energy storage installations will grow more than fivefold by 2030. In its latest report, IHS Markit predicts that Australia’s energy storage installations will grow from 500 MW to more than 12.8 GW by 2030. Today, Australia accounts for less than 3% of the world’s total installed battery energy storage capacity and is the seventh largest market in the world. By 2030, it is expected to account for 7% of global installations and become the third largest market. This growth will be driven primarily by three different market segments: residential, standalone front-of-the-meter, and co-location with utility-scale renewables.
