market background
Vietnam’s printing industry is listed as one of the industries that are supported by the country. The printing service industry includes publishing, packaging and textiles, as well as raw materials and equipment suppliers for printing plant operations. Vietnam’s printing industry contributes more than US$5 billion to Vietnam’s GDP, accounting for 1% of the country’s total GDP, and provides about 90,000 jobs. If the packaging and papermaking industries are included, the number of employees has exceeded 220,000.
According to statistics, more than 25,000 printing companies have submitted business license applications, of which 2,300 have been approved. In addition, the Vietnamese printing industry has been classified as a business cluster by the Vietnamese government, which includes companies in the same geographical area, involving foreign trade, bringing national competitiveness and exceeding the standards of domestic industry groups.
But while there is hope, Vietnam’s high-end manufacturing industry has low labor skills, underdeveloped infrastructure leading to high logistics costs, and a slow recovery in the industrial market under the epidemic, all of which are still waiting for the Vietnamese government to seek more positive changes.
Taking Vietnam’s paper and paper product exports in 2022 as an example, there has been an increase compared to 2021: exports to Cambodia increased by 21.4%, Taiwan increased by 22.6%, Indonesia increased by 28.8%, Thailand increased by 84.6%, Australia increased by 12.3%, Singapore increased by 10.6%, the Philippines increased by 38.4%, the UAE increased by 34.9%, etc. The growth rate of paper and paper product exports to all markets is strong, and the number of markets has increased by 65%. Exports to some markets such as China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Germany have declined.
By the first half of 2023, Vietnam’s total import and export of goods reached US$316.65 billion, down 15.2% year-on-year. Among them, exports amounted to US$164.45 billion, down 12.1%; imports amounted to US$152.2 billion, down 18.2%; and the trade surplus was US$12.25 billion.
