Market analysis
The Polish pet market is dominated by traditional pet stores (about 2,700), similar to the Italian pet market. On the other hand, in Poland, more than 240 stores of eight national chains have begun to cooperate in some way. In 2019, the total sales of the Polish pet care industry amounted to $1,258 billion (€1,062 billion), making it the leader in Eastern Europe.
According to the latest data, Poland’s pet food exports continue to grow, and the Chinese market is seen as an important development opportunity. Last year, Poland’s pet food exports reached 1.9 billion euros, of which dog and cat food accounted for 76% of the total exports. Germany is the main importing country, while the Chinese market has broad prospects. The Polish pet food industry is expected to maintain an annual growth rate of 5% to 7% in the next few years.
The rise of e-commerce has also shaped the pet care market in Eastern European countries. Online platforms offer convenience and a wide range of products, allowing pet owners to offer their pets a variety of options. Following the e-commerce boom in 2020, online sales of pet care in Eastern Europe increased by 50%, and the channel continues to grow – albeit at a much slower pace.
Among Eastern European countries, Poland has the highest e-commerce share in pet care sales, with more than one in five pet products sold online.
