Background of Russian clothing market:
The output of Russia’s domestic clothing industry is low, and the market share of locally produced clothing is small. Clothing products rely on imports. In addition, the development of Russia’s domestic economy and the exchange rate of its currency directly affect the rise and fall of sales in its domestic clothing industry. Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, international clothing brands have suspended their business in Russia, including luxury brands represented by LVMH Group and mass consumer goods such as Nike, Adidas, and H&M.
Marina Malahachik, senior director of CBRE’s retail department, said that in general, shopping malls in Moscow, such as Atrium Shopping Center, Paveletskaya Square and Mall of Europe, there are about 200 stores, of which international brands account for 30% to 40%, and they usually occupy half of the entire shopping center. As these international brands close stores and withdraw from the Russian market, the market share they vacate needs to be replenished urgently. Anna Lepsak-Clemons, CEO of Fashion Consulting Group, said that without the participation of foreign partners, Russian companies will not be able to provide products to the market, because the main raw materials and accessories used in the production of clothing and footwear are currently imported, the local textile industry provides no more than 25% of the market share of finished products, and the equipment of the textile industry also relies on imports. “The clothing and footwear market is heavily dependent on imports at all levels and requires foreign suppliers and contractors to keep it running.”
With the continuous recovery of the Russian economy, its market development prospects are still broad, import demand is strong, and foreign companies have a large space for development. Clothing imports from China, Bangladesh, Belarus and other countries are increasing.
