Analysis of the Vietnamese market:

Vietnam’s raw material imports to increase in May 2024

(VNA, June 11) In May 2024, Vietnam’s merchandise trade deficit stood at about 1 billion U.S. dollars, becoming the first month with a trade deficit in the past two years. According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, machinery, equipment, spare parts and raw materials for domestic production accounted for 88.8 percent of total merchandise imports. In the first five months of this year, the cumulative volume of Vietnam’s merchandise imports amounted to 132.16 billion U.S. dollars, up 19.8 percent year on year. Among them, the import value of computers, electronic products and spare parts is expected to reach 40.25 billion U.S. dollars, up 27.3 percent year on year; the import value of machinery equipment and spare parts is expected to reach 18.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 15.4 percent. In the textile and clothing industry, the value of imports of cotton, fabrics, yarns and various textile and clothing raw materials increased by 14.32% month-on-month in May and by 15.34% month-on-month in the first five months.

Vietnam’s auto market sees slight growth in May 2024

(VNA, June 13) The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) reported that in May 2024, car sales of its members totaled 25,794 units, up 6% compared with April. Among them, the sales volume of passenger cars was 18,235 units, up 6%; the sales volume of commercial vehicles was 7,292 units, up 7%; and the sales volume of special vehicles was 267 units, down 4%; % of the previous month. In terms of vehicle origin, the sales volume of vehicles produced and assembled in Vietnam was 11,985 units, up 0.02% month-on-month; the sales volume of imported cars of origin was 13,809 units, up 12% month-on-month. In the first five months of 2024, the total sales of VAMA member cars were 108,309 units, down 5% year-on-year. Among them, sales of cars produced and assembled in Vietnam decreased by 14% year-on-year, and sales of imported cars increased by 8% year-on-year. Other car brands in the Vietnamese car market, such as Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, etc., have not disclosed their performance.
