RX Releases Sustainability Roadmap Detailing Path to the Net

CHICAGO — RX has released its sustainability roadmap, detailing the company’s path to achieving net zero by 2040.

As a founding member of the events industry’s Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge, launched in 2021, RX prioritises and champions sustainability, and has achieved a 45% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 location-related emissions since 2018.

RX’s sustainability roadmap has been guided by the Net Zero Carbon Events Roadmap published in 2022, which provides common frameworks for different stakeholders in the events sector.

“The Net Zero Carbon Events initiative focuses on the emissions associated with the full lifecycle of events, from the energy used to the production of stands, signage, carpets, food and associated waste, logistics and travel,” RX CEO Hugh Jones said in the roadmap. “While our immediate challenge is to measure these emissions, our roadmap sets out the steps we are taking to ensure we reduce our emissions to net zero by 2040.”

RX’s roadmap outlines five areas of focus where the company sees the greatest potential for meaningful impact:

    1. Energy: Power your events efficiently with clean, renewable energy
    2. Production and waste: rethinking events to use sustainable materials and avoid waste
    3. Food and Food Waste: Source Sustainable Food and End Food Waste
    4. Freight and Logistics: Transport goods and equipment efficiently and move to zero-emission logistics
    5. Travel: Working with and influencing travel sector partners to reduce and mitigate travel-related emissions

It also outlines the company’s current short-term (2025), medium-term (2030) and long-term (2040) goals. In the short term, RX hopes to establish consistent and regular reporting, establish energy reduction tracking, set waste reduction targets for each business unit, ensure that 50% of RX food for events is vegetarian and/or vegan, work with logistics providers and venues to reduce emissions associated with transporting show materials and test opportunities for visitors to offset travel at the point of registration.

“I am motivated by the knowledge that we will make positive and lasting change for our industry and our planet. Every day, I am inspired by the people I work with: their commitment, their creativity, their adaptability, their innovation. Working together, I am very excited about the impact we will have,” Helen Sheppard, RX’s global chief sustainability officer, said in the roadmap.

The roadmap also highlights some of RX’s sustainability efforts, including the National Hardware Show’s initiatives to reduce carpet use and reduce the need for printed materials by creating a digital directory and using smart badge technology. Batimat’s booth policy, which limits itself to five eco-friendly options and sets booth size limits, and its logistics plan to promote rail and bus transportation were also highlighted. The Functional Fabric Fair is used as an example of industry commitment, with exhibitors only being considered if they are striving for, or have already achieved, at least 50% of their materials from a recycled source.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, in 2022 RX established a Global Sustainability Council, comprised of representatives from across the company who meet monthly to support RX’s strategy. RX’s accomplishments to date include conducting carbon footprints of 10 of its events to better understand all emissions categories, developing a production materials library, and launching the RX Sustainability Handbook to all employees.

“The goal of RX events will always be to help companies grow their businesses,” Jones said. “Our events bring everyone together at the same time, which creates incredible efficiencies. Where else can you find that kind of opportunity?”
