SAN ANTONIO—San Antonio’s River Walk is set to add a new luxury convention hotel. The former The Wyndham San Antonio will be transformed into the 391-room InterContinental San Antonio, scheduled to open in late 2024.
Behind the development is Trailbreak Partners, a Denver-based real estate investment and development firm that has worked with InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) and Scarlett Hotel Group will secure $158 million in financing needed to completely transform the property.
“San Antonio continues to grow and evolve and we are thrilled to welcome the new InterContinental in 2024,” said Marc Anderson, president and CEO of Visit San Antonio. “Even during the pandemic, San Antonio has continued to diversify and provide new reasons for meetings and trade shows to choose our city by opening more than 100 locally owned, chef-driven restaurants, more than a dozen new hotels and unique new event spaces. The new InterContinental San Antonio will continue the city’s trajectory by offering luxury accommodations and event space in our unbeatable, friendly downtown.”
The InterContinental San Antonio opened in 1958, originally as an office building. Located adjacent to the Weston Centre, the 21-story building offers direct access to the River Walk and a water taxi landing area. Once renovated, the InterContinental San Antonio will feature 40,000 square feet of meeting space, world-class restaurants and bars, and a rooftop pool with views of downtown.
Plans also call for paintings, sculptures and custom furniture to adorn the lobby and guest rooms. There will be a series of flexible indoor meeting spaces, and the meeting rooms will be constructed from electrochromic glass, also known as smart glass.
