The Saudi textile market is already one of the high-growth markets in the Arab region, and the main sales areas are concentrated in the three major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Jeddah, as the city with the most support and investment in construction. In recent years, the gap between the demand for daily consumer goods and the market demand is extremely large. In 2016, the population of Saudi Arabia exceeded 30 million. It is expected that the population of Saudi Arabia will increase from 30 million to 47 million in 2023. In the face of such a large population expansion, it will naturally become an important market for textiles and daily consumer goods. Currently, Saudi consumer goods account for 90% of imports from China. In addition, the Saudi retail market is expected to increase from $66.7 billion in 2012 to $73.6 billion this year. The growth drivers are mainly high consumption rates, population and income growth, and the growth of the young population and consumers. At the same time, per capita consumption in Saudi Arabia will reach US$4,000 in 2015, an increase of 50% compared to 2010. Industry estimates indicate that the Saudi retail market is larger than previously reported.
Almost all of the Middle East’s clothing and textile products rely on imports, especially China’s clothing and textile imports, which continue to increase. Saudi Arabia imports $4 billion worth of clothing and textiles annually, with Chinese products accounting for 37%, ranking second after Europe. European clothing is mainly produced by traditional clothing producing countries such as Italy, France and Spain. According to market data released by Saudi Arabia, imports of clothing and textiles have increased significantly, with an annual increase of more than 15%.
