Dieter Ungerboeck, co-founder of Ungerboeck Software, dies

SAINT-LOUIS —Ungerboeck, a leading event and venue management software company, announced the death of co-founder Dieter K. Ungerboeck on August 16 at the age of 80.

Dieter and his late wife Catherine co-founded Ungerboeck Systems, Inc. (USI); Catherine led software development and Dieter led customer relations. Dieter’s vision was to create a single software system that would connect all event stakeholders and facilitate corporate finances. The company gained recognition for its event management software (EBMS) in 1989.

“The event software industry has lost a pioneer, but the trend of using technology to deliver events will continue, and for that, the industry will be forever grateful to Dieter,” said Manish Chandak, president and CEO of Ungerboeck. “His legacy lives on in many of the world’s leading event spaces.”

Over the next three decades, USI has grown and evolved to become one of the most important brands in the events industry. In 2021, Ungerboeck acquired Event booking, Priava, ShoWorks, and Risk Sense Technologies, integrating the products and teams into the Ungerboeck family. Ungerboeck currently serves clients in more than 50 countries and employs nearly 500 people in the United States.

Dieter, born in Vienna, moved to St. Louis in his 20s and started a family and two businesses in his adopted hometown.

“Dieter built an incredible company,” said Steve Mackenzie, Executive Vice President of Ungerboeck. “He had incredible insight into the industry and could predict where technology needed to go to fit the market. His concept of a unified system from booking to balance sheet was fundamental to the evolution of the product. Dieter was a true pioneer in the event management industry and was very passionate about building a global company in the city he loved, St. Louis.”

Although Dieter retired from Ungerboeck in 2009, he went on to found the Ozark Yacht Club in Lake Ozark, Missouri, that same year.

“He built a very successful marina business when he was supposed to be ‘retired,’” Mackenzie said. “But that was Dieter. He could never sit still. I know he would have wanted us all to remember him as someone who cared deeply about his family, his business and his boating – probably in that order.”
