market opportunity
Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and has experienced double-digit growth for the past twelve consecutive years. It is also Africa’s second most populous country and its construction sector is expected to grow faster than its neighbors, highlighting the country’s enormous investment potential. As the population increases and the rate of urbanization increases, the demand for housing also increases, providing huge development opportunities to the construction sector.
The country’s construction sector is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 11.6% and will be driven by a surge in infrastructure investment in the region. Currently, the Ethiopian construction market is worth $59 billion. Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tirune said at the opening ceremony of the Ethiopian Big Five Industries Exhibition 2024 that Ethiopia’s construction industry has reached a significant milestone, contributing 21 percent to the Ethiopian GDP.
In June 2023, the Addis Ababa government held a preliminary event to announce the preparation of 60,000 housing units under the public-private partnership plan. According to the Addis Ababa Mayor’s Office, the houses will be built and delivered to residents within three years. The housing project is said to have created direct employment opportunities for over 200,000 youth in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia’s industrial base materials industry has grown rapidly in recent years, but overall it remains in a shortage phase and relies heavily on imports, especially of important base materials such as ‘steel.
In recent years, as the attractiveness of Ethiopia’s economic growth continues to grow, more and more foreign companies have entered the Ethiopian construction market. Foreign investments have brought new technologies, management experience and financial support to the Ethiopian construction sector.
Many Chinese companies that have entered the Ethiopian market have made significant profits. For example: Dongfang Steel Co., Ltd. has an annual output of 700,000 tons of rebar and wire rod, and its products are mainly sold to the local market in Ethiopia. XCMG, a construction machinery manufacturer, sold a total of 88 construction machinery equipment to Ethiopia between last year and this year (24 units in the first year and 64 units in the second year). China Communications Construction Company, Guangdong Keda Clean Energy and Guangzhou Senda Trading Co., Ltd. : jointly invested in an Ethiopian ceramic factory in Ethiopia, whose products are mainly sold in Ethiopia.
Furthermore, the Ethiopian government has implemented various preferential policies and tax exemption schemes to attract foreign investment in the construction sector.
The Ethiopian construction industry is in a phase of rapid development. Infrastructure construction and foreign investment provide enormous development opportunities for the Ethiopian construction sector. As Ethiopia’s economy continues to grow, the construction sector plays an important role in the country’s development.
