Presentation of the exhibition

We are pleased to announce the official launch of the Zurich Solar & Storage Show!

The Solar & Energy Storage Show in Zurich, Switzerland in September 2024 is an exhibition organised by Terrapinn in Zurich, Switzerland. The cycle takes place once a year. Solar & Storage Live UK is considered the UK’s number one exhibition for the renewable energy and energy storage industry. With the growing demand in Europe, we decided it was time to create another cutting-edge, stimulating and exciting renewable energy exhibition that celebrates progress towards a greener, smarter and more decentralised energy system, transitioning to cutting-edge technology.

The exhibition will bring together key stakeholders, innovators and disruptors in the energy value chain to showcase their technology and service solutions aimed at driving technological change in the energy sector.

The exhibition is expected to welcome 150 exhibitors and 8,000 professional visitors, and more than 250 people will deliver opening speeches to discuss future energy development and the current state of the industry. At the beginning of the exhibition, electricity suppliers, solar project sponsors and developers, as well as professionals from government and regulatory agencies and power utilities will come to the exhibition site.

Why now? WHY NOW?

Switzerland has the lowest carbon intensity among IEA members because its carbon-free electricity sector is dominated by nuclear and hydropower.

On 21 May 2017, Switzerland voted in favour of the first stage of the Energy Strategy 2050 and adopted the revised Energy Act proposed by the Swiss Federal Council and Parliament. The revised Energy Act aims to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency and promote renewable energies. In addition, the construction of new nuclear power plants will be banned, meaning that the Swiss energy sector is undergoing a major transformation. In addition, the revised Energy Act includes targets to reduce Switzerland’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and to strengthen domestic renewable energies.

Renewable energies represent 70% of annual energy needs.

Today in Switzerland, around 53% of electricity is produced by fully renewable hydroelectric power plants, 36% by nuclear power plants (the average efficiency of thermal energy to electrical energy is 25%), and the remaining 11% by biofuels (<5.7%), waste incineration (<2.7%), photovoltaics and wind power. Electricity production in Switzerland therefore generates almost no CO2 emissions.

Switzerland is currently implementing its energy transition through the Energy Strategy 2050, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality. Since 2020, only 4 of the 5 Swiss nuclear power plants have been commissioned and the share of renewable energies in total final energy consumption reached around 28% in 2021.

Switzerland still has significant untapped solar photovoltaic potential in established areas. The greatest savings are achieved if less than two-thirds of the roof is covered. The next step is to determine which roofs are best suited.

The Swiss government intends to continue promoting hydropower, including by supporting the renovation and expansion of existing power plants to increase their efficiency. However, given the number of existing power plants, restrictions in environmental law, regulations on nature and landscape protection, and other factors, the likelihood of building new hydropower plants is slim.

The government also said it hopes to boost solar power generation through tax breaks for investments in photovoltaic systems for renovations and new buildings, while simplifying the approval process for solar panels installed on roofs and facades.

Another measure is to replace traditional household electricity meters with smart meters. More accurate data will make it possible to supply electricity more efficiently and save electricity. Regulations on carbon dioxide emissions from new cars will become stricter and more extensive. From 2021, passenger cars will be allowed to emit an average of only 95 g CO2/km across the entire new vehicle fleet, which is about a quarter less than currently.

Even by the end of 2030, solar photovoltaic power generation is expected to remain the leader in the Swiss electricity market in terms of cumulative installed capacity. Solar photovoltaic power dominates the total installed renewable energy generation capacity in Switzerland.

This share is expected to increase further by 2030. Electricity production from the solar market is expected to reach 2 billion kilowatt hours in 2023. The solar energy market in Switzerland is expected to grow by 2.02% (2023-2028), resulting in a market capacity of 2.21 billion kWh in 2028.
