Market presentation:
The shipping industry in Malaysia continues to thrive and will experience strong growth momentum.
The country’s shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry has been identified as a national strategic industry and recognized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). There are currently about 100 shipyards and 40 companies supporting the SBSR industry in Malaysia.
Malaysia currently has the capacity to build ships of 30,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT). At the same time, many state-of-the-art shipyards are capable of building complex medium-sized vessels, offshore support vessels (OSVs) for clients in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, as well as servicing large vessels.
Ship repair and refurbishment in Malaysia has always been the backbone of the related business. It provides a stable source of revenue for the region. The government believes that a corresponding expansion of capacity is essential to compete for a larger market share.
