Detroit Convention Center Renamed Huntington Place

DETROIT — The 723,000-square-foot convention center in downtown Detroit just got a new name: Huntington Place. In a Dec. 9 announcement, the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) said the new name is the result of the merger of Huntington Bancshares Incorporated and TCF Financial Corporation into Huntington National Bank. TCF purchased the naming rights in 2019 and renamed the center, previously called Cobo Center, to TCF Center.

TCF now has a new name after the merger, which means the convention center, which hosts many major conferences and trade shows, including the North American International Auto Show, as well as a variety of special events, will do so as well. The center, which opened in 1960, completed a $279 million transformation six years ago and, before the COVID-19 pandemic, was attracting 1.5 million international visitors to the city. Center officials expect its meetings and conventions market to return to growth in 2022.

“Our naming rights agreement, which was a priority for the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority, began with TCF Bank and continues with Huntington Bank to strengthen the financial future of the center. We are committed to not only contributing to the economic vitality of our region, but also creating jobs and strengthening our destination’s appeal to visitors,” said Lisa Canada, DRCFA President. “Both of our organizations have a deep commitment to the communities we serve.”
