FRANKFURT — It makes perfect sense that a bicycle industry event would lead the way in using bike sharing as a means of transportation to trade shows.
This is what is happening with the giant Eurobike trade fair, which will be held from 13 to 17 July 2022 in Frankfurt. A new initiative with Deutsche Bahn Connect (DB Connect), a subsidiary of the German railway company Deutsche Bahn, will allow participants to reach the trade fair by bike using dedicated paths.
Participants will receive discount vouchers for the use of over 2,000 DB Connect “Call a Bike” rental bikes available at the rental stations at the city’s main railway station and at other pop-up stations in the immediate vicinity. To make their travel to Messe Frankfurt easier, an official Eurobike map and a network of cycle paths specially designed for Eurobike will be provided. The trade fair will also offer numerous bicycle parking spaces, which will be securely monitored.
“Eurobike will become the driving force behind the transformation of mobility,” fairnamic CEO Stefan Reisinger told Cycling Industry News. “The combination of city-based content and conceptual design, excellent on-site infrastructure and best national and international accessibility underline our claim as a leading global trade fair and the most important live platform for the bicycle and urban mobility sector.”
In the long term, the show organisers and DB Connect hope to pave the way for new “Bicycle and Rail” opportunities.
In the United States, cities that are leading the way in bike sharing are starting to promote the option to participants, including New York’s Javits Center, which includes information about arriving by bike right on its website, alongside taxi and train arrivals. A Citizen bike rental station is located right next to the center, at 34th Street and 11th Avenue, and the convention center also has its own entrance for guests of the NY Waterway, a new ferry service that crosses the Hudson River.
Chicago’s McCormick Plaza is also part of the city’s Divvy bike-share system. A 24-hour pass can be purchased at any Divvy station and used for an unlimited 30-minute ride.
